The Department of Biology, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position focused on understanding the importance of cascading effects for higher tropic-level biodiversity (e.g., arthropods, birds, mammals) following restoration of plant diversity and composition of landscapes.
This data-driven project (no field work) focuses on quantifying how vegetation restoration can be used to enhance multi-taxa, multi-facet, and multi-scale biodiversity patterns across Denmark and ultimately Europe.
Specifically, the successful candidate will quantify the potential to restore interactions (i.e., reconnect species that became disconnected) in an area following restoration of the vegetation component. The project will access effects following both restoration of natural degraded habitats as well as restoration after the conversion of agricultural areas to nature.
This postdoc project is part of the Centre for Sustainable Landscapes in a Changing World (SustainScapes).

The position is for 2 years.
Start date is 1st of October 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
This postdoc project will be part of the SustainScapes Centre and be hosted at the Section of Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity (ECOINF). The successful candidate is also expected to be associated with the Center for Landscape Research in Sustainable Agricultural Futures (LandCRAFT).
The project will focus on developing the modelling framework for Denmark, and secondly the transferability of these across Europe. The study organisms are plants, arthropods, birds, and mammals.
This position is macroecological focused (no field work), leveraging existing distribution, functional, and phylogenetic datasets of multiple taxa across Denmark to assess:
- Which biodiversity gains for animal species (insects, birds, mammals) can be enhanced by restoring the vegetation component?
- Quantify the changes in topological attributes of plant-animal interactions networks resulting from changes in the vegetation and associated animal components.
Your profile
Applicants must have a PhD degree in ecology, geography, or equivalent; and have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment before the application deadline. Expertise in macroecology is expected, combined with experience inferring biotic association networks using either empirical/field data or derived using biogeographical/macroecological models. Solid geospatial/statistical modelling and data architecture/management skills are also required skills.
The project will cover plants, insects, and vertebrates, so experience with the ecology of these groups is also an advantage.
Expertise from European temperate ecosystems like those in Denmark might be an advantage. The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills, proven abilities to publish at a high international level, and good English command. International applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate excellent English language writing skills and fluency.

Supervisor and collaborators:
Associate professor Alejandro Ordonez will be the main supervisor, with Professor & SustainScapes director Signe Normand (Aarhus University) as a co-supervisor.
The postdoc will join the ECOINF and SustainScapes team at the Department of Biology at Aarhus University.
ECOINF harbours strong expertise in macroecology, remote sensing, multitaxon ecology, and broadly in ecology and biodiversity.
SustainScapes is a Centre of Excellence funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation through their "Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme". SustainScapes aims to rethink how we use the Danish landscape, given the need to restore biodiversity in a world with increasing resource necessities and a changing climate.
ECOINF and SustainScapes constitute an ambitious, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and highly international research community. Multiple local and international collaborators will be included where relevant. Postdocs and PhD students are encouraged to collaborate within the group, across departments, and with other universities.

The Department of Biology hosts research programs and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department currently employs approximately 140 academic and technical staff and 40 PhD students. Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
